Don Quixote (The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha) is a novel by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. It is considered one of the best novels of all time, often called the first actual modern novel, and is one of the most translated books in the world. It was first published in 1605 and it tells the story of Alonso Quixano, a member of the Spanish nobility. Being very fond of reading stories about chivalry, Alonso reads so many that eventually he loses his mind and he decides to become a knight, and wander the land in search of adventure. Using the name Don Quixote de la Mancha, he recruits Sancho Panza to be his squire, and goes to live his fantasy. The book has been interpreted as a comic novel, a tragedy, and a philosophical social commentary. It has influenced books such as The Three Musketeers, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Cyrano de Bergerac.

The name pulp comes from the cheap wood pulp paper on which the magazines were printed. Magazines printed on better paper were called "glossies" or "slicks." In their first decades, they were most often priced at ten cents per magazine, while competing slicks were 25 cents apiece. Pulps were the successor to the penny dreadfuls, dime novels, and short fiction magazines of the 19th century. Although many respected writers wrote for pulps, the magazines are best remembered for their lurid and exploitative stories and sensational cover art. Modern superhero comic books are sometimes considered descendants of "hero pulps"; pulp magazines often featured illustrated novel-length stories of heroic characters, such as The Shadow, Doc Savage, and The Phantom Detective.
